Building Together #8 - IEEE Education Week in Romania 2: Trends and Challenges in Engineering Education

Organized in collaboration with IEEE Romania

#shapingtogether #developingtogether

Life and education in pandemic continue and after almost two years we have gained experience, provided numerous research and analysis, we reflected on the steps taken in 30 webinars Online Together. We know what we could have done better, we have ideas on how to do better, how to set education for the digital age, what we would like to learn from science and technology and now it is time to act.

In this new series of webinars Together, our aim is to provide information, ideas, analyzes, challenge you to discussions and encourage you to build a future on how to make the necessary changes, move further and shape education and science for today and tomorrow.

The Politehnica University of Timișoara with the Education Romania Chapter. organised two events in affiliation with IEEE Education Week, part of the Build Together webinar.

We Build Together #8 Webinar of April 6, 2022 brought to the fore a debate on the sustainability of engineering education and the role of the IEEE in supporting student training, a debate on online and offline education, how to train future engineers and how to attract young people to study engineering.

Professors and students from the technical universities of Timișoara, Bucharest, Cluj Napoca, Iași discussed who are trends and possible solutions for integration and individual development, but also at university level, of an engineering student at all levels of education (bachelor's, master's, doctorate).

In the webinar #8 the following topics were discussed:

  • the impact of online, digital education on how to train the future engineer
  • online - offline benefit analysis
  • the challenges of how to train the future engineer and how to attract young people to study engineering sciences
  • the role of the IEEE in the development of engineering education in Romania
  • the vision of technical education in 2030

The debate was supported by professors and students from technical universities in several cities. they looked for solutions of integration and individual development, both at a general level and at a particular level, of a university, of an engineering student, at all three levels of education (bachelor, master, doctorate).

In this online session, each presenter spoke from his own experience gained during the years of teaching and engineering in the field of engineering, presenting the best experiences, but also challenges, concrete and real situations, applicable ideas and beneficial advice.

Also, the participants did not hesitate to show their interest during this meeting, so they trained in discussions and intervened with questions, precisely to get the information as well as possible.

Also, on the same day, from 19:00, the webinar took place Virtual mobility collaboration project, based on the project TalkTech, and was supported in English by Diana Andone (Polytechnic University of Timisoara) and Mark Frydenberg (Bentley University), the professors who initiated and continuously lead this project since 2008.

Through this webinar, the presenters sought to encourage and inspire, but certainly provide, participants with the tools to bring a new dimension to their teaching activities in terms of designing activities for students to become co-creators of educational content.

As in this project, students can create artifacts that can be used back in education as OERs, and open education and OER production information will also be included.

Education Romania Chapter.  encourages and supports activities to promote engineering through a variety of actions, support materials created and shared among IEEE colleagues, organizes conferences where studies from educational experiences, seminars and webinars for inspiration for best practices.

IEEE offers pre-university STEM, university, and continuing professional education resources for engineers and technical professionals all over the globe!

From local and regional activities, to webinars and online courses, to scholarships and events, and so much more, IEEE offers members and the global community a wealth of educational resources.

In support of this mission, the IEEE Education Society organized a full program of company-sponsored events from April 4-8, 2022, as part of IEEE Education Week.

IEEE Education Week

is a week to showcase the educational opportunities offered by the IEEE and its many organizational units, societies and committees around the world. IEEE Education Week is a great way to explore IEE's educational programs and offerings.

The webinar was broadcast live on the Zoom platform (registration required), Facebook and YouTube.

Together we will respond to the challenges of building models and structures in education and science in collaboration with IEEE Romania, EDEN Europe Association, Romanian Alliance of Technical Universities and Politehnica University of Timisoara.
