UPT projects inspire the international community: Nokia Bell Labs VR application, developed through the European project Accelerate Future HEI, presented at IEEE DEMOcon 2026

Timișoara, June 2026

Politehnica University of Timișoara (UPT) continues to reconfirm its status as a leader in innovation and digital education through strategic partnerships and active participation in large-scale European projects. An example of good practice in this regard is the Nokia Bell Labs Virtual Reality application, a successful student project developed within the European Horizon Europe project. Accelerate Future HEI.

The application, designed and developed by Cătălin Săvoiu, a student in the Multimedia Technologies master's program at UPT, has enjoyed worldwide visibility. The product was initially selected and presented to the international academic community at the IEEE DEMOcon Research Summer School 2026, and later went directly to the main stage of the IEEE DEMOcon 2026 International Conference.

Integrating the project into the official section Exhibition demonstrations The conference offered participants and industry experts the opportunity to virtually explore the Nokia Museum and test how VR technology can radically transform the learning process and interaction with the history of telecommunications. Exposing the application on the same platform as live demonstrations and engineering models from leading global companies, such as Nokia and Lasting, highlights the added value that European consortia bring to Romanian universities.

Beyond the academic component, this success highlights the usefulness of the project Accelerate Future HEI as a resource facilitator. With the direct support of this initiative funded by the Horizon Europe program, a student idea born in the UPT laboratories could be materialized and finalized as a concrete technological product for a world-class corporation, such as Nokia.

The presence and impact of this virtual reality project at an event like IEEE DEMOcon 2026 demonstrates that international alliances and the close connection between academia and the private sector are essential for generating top-notch technological solutions, capable of receiving international recognition and applause.
