European Museum Night 2026 at the UPT Museum: Hundreds of visitors discovered history with the help of technology and experimented with state-of-the-art applications alongside the DeL UPT team
The event was organized by the Politehnica University of Timișoara, through the UPT Technical Museum and the Department of ID/IFR and Digital Education, Multimedia Center, together with the cultural project Spotlight Heritage Timișoara. Over 400 people crossed the threshold of the UPT Museum on Saturday evening, exploring together with the DeL team the origins of technology, but also the latest generation technologies
The DeL and CM teams offered dozens of guided tours to the participants, who discovered MECIPT-1 – the first computer in the Romanian university environment. Alongside it, visitors could experience the latest virtual reality and mixed reality applications, developed by UPT students and faculty within the Spotlight Heritage Timișoara project.
Dozens of children enjoyed interactive applications with educational and entertaining values, while young people explored the world of VR and AR, and seniors rediscovered, with nostalgia and curiosity, technological equipment from different eras. Among the exhibits and installations present were:
The new AR application for interactive visualization of heritage objects in 3D, developed by the CeL & CM teams
The latest achievements of the Spotlight Heritage Timișoara project in the field of virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR/XR), through which the public explored significant landmarks of the city of Timișoara with the help of state-of-the-art digital technologies.
A documented foray into the history of information technologies, including a visit to the MECIPT-1 prototype, alongside a relevant collection of equipment illustrating the evolution of the sector.
The VR application "Bell Labs Expo", made by UPT students, dedicated to the development of communications equipment, from the first transistor to today's phones.
Physic AI Garden: a dynamic virtual ecosystem, populated by virtual botanical and mycological entities (artists: Anna Dumitriu & Alex May, in collaboration with CAPABLE Project and BioArt Revolution, with the support of the Romanian Science Festival).
Patterns of Poetry: an interactive installation (artist: Marius Jurca, 13m10d) that proposes an exploration of the Timișoara landscape through the synergy between poetry and chromatic elements.
Games based on augmented reality (AR), which facilitate interaction with artifacts from urban cultural heritage.
